Who will represent Oakville in the 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay?

Nominations for the town’s community torchbearer now being accepted online

As a celebration community for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay, the Town of Oakville is now accepting nominations for its community torchbearer to carry the flame through Oakville next June.

“Being part of the Pan Am Games Torch Relay is a chance to showcase Oakville’s incredibly livability and the active nature of our community,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. “Oakville is proud to be one of more than 130 communities across Canada participating in the relay and I encourage everyone who is eligible to apply for this great opportunity.”

Oakville’s community torchbearer must be a Canadian citizen or legal resident, at least 13 years of age on or before May 30, 2015, and a resident of the Town of Oakville. Visit the Oakville Pan Am Games page for a full description of the eligibility criteria.

According to the Torch Relay organizers, a community torchbearer is someone who embodies the true spirit of the games and the Toronto 2015 vision to: inspire participation in sport; celebrate multiculturalism; and leave a legacy of sustainable excellence.

The Oakville Pan Am Torch Relay 2015 Community Committee will receive nominations online until Friday, January 9, 2015. The committee, including representatives from local sport and community organizations and town staff, will review all eligible nominations after January 9 to select one community torchbearer and two alternates. Those selected will be contacted by the committee by the end of January after which their names will be provided to the TO2015 Torch Relay organizers for final review and approval.

The Torch Relay is a 41-day journey to celebrate the spirit of the Pan Am Games in communities across Canada, starting May 30, 2015. The torch will travel through Oakville in June before its final stop at the Pan Am Games opening ceremonies in Toronto on July 10, 2015.
