Town to introduce new planning requirements for assessing power generation proposals

Council passed interim control by-law in March 2009 to allow staff to undertake studies

The Town of Oakville announced today that it will introduce new planning requirements for assessing proposals for power generation facilities. The new requirements are part of the proposed amendments to the town’s official plan, zoning by-law and north Oakville zoning by-law. An open house will be held on September 21, followed by a public meeting on September 27.

“Council in March 2009 unanimously approved an interim control by-law prohibiting power plants greater than 10 megawatts to give staff the time to develop policies and regulations on how they should be treated,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “These proposed regulations are the product of nearly 18 months of work and Council is eager to hear feedback about them from the community.”

The proposed amendments will provide policy direction and regulation on how to treat development proposals for power generation facilities, including cogeneration facilities. The new requirements provide the town with the ability to assess proposals for power generation facilities to determine their appropriate scale and location within the town.

The open house will be held on September 21 from 7–9 p.m. in the Trafalgar room at Town Hall. This is an opportunity for Oakville residents, businesses and community groups to provide feedback on the proposed amendments and ask questions of town staff.

The public meeting will take place at Planning and Development Council on September 27 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Town Hall. Council will hear public delegations at this meeting. Town Hall is located at 1225 Trafalgar Road.
