Town of Oakville wins national environmental award

Oakville Harbours recognized for meeting highest environmental standards in Canada

The Canadian Safe Boating Council’s (CSBC) Safeguarding the Environment award was presented to Oakville Town Council last night. The town received the award for attaining Boating Ontario’s Clean Marine Five Anchor Diamond designation, becoming the first municipal marina in Ontario and one of six organizations across Canada to achieve the rating.

“This award is further confirmation that Oakville is leading on the environment, and is another reminder that the town is dedicated to creating an even greener, healthier, and more livable Oakville,” Mayor Rob Burton said.

Oakville attained the prestigious Diamond designation by adopting more than 200 standards administered by the Ontario Marine Operators’ Association (now Boating Ontario), Environment Canada, and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

“The town makes every effort to implement sound environmental practices in every aspect of our operations. After instituting or enhancing a significant number of environmental initiatives, the town’s two harbours were audited by GreenLeaf Environmental, a third party firm, and received the highest designation, a feat achieved by very few marinas,” said Cindy Toth, the town’s director of Environmental Policy.

Some of these environmental initiatives include:

obtaining industry-approved spills kits and training
improving hazardous waste collection and recycling
implementing a shrink wrap recycling program
eliminating the release of contaminants to the water, both directly and indirectly
optimizing energy and water conservation
using high-efficiency lighting
promoting good environmental practices to boaters

The Canadian Safe Boating (CASBA) Awards are presented each year to honour the efforts of the general public, volunteers, professionals, agencies and organizations who have distinguished themselves in the fields of boating safety and environmental stewardship.

The 2013 CASBA Awards were held on January 12, 2014 at the Toronto Sheraton Centre.
