Town of Oakville reduces costs through energy conservation at Town Hall

The energy use at Town Hall is at its lowest level since 2001 despite a 50 per cent increase in building occupancy.

“Ensuring we have programs and services that are fiscally and environmentally sustainable is a priority for Council. Reducing energy use at Town Hall is one way we are meeting that goal,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “Many of the changes we implemented are easy to do and truly make a large dent in energy use. The town is setting an example of how one organization can really make a difference.”

Over the last 12 months, Town Hall reduced the use of electricity by 17.5 per cent and natural gas by 26 per cent. Town Hall also decreased water use by 15 per cent over previous years. To achieve this result the town improved the building automation system, controlled the maximum and minimum temperatures, replaced weather stripping and caulking, and installed lighting motion sensors. The improvements cost approximately $365,000 and produced a savings of over $78,700, allowing expenses to be paid for in approximately four years.

The town continues to promote sustainable initiatives including the new Corporate Energy Management Plan that reduces energy and costs throughout all town facilities. As part of the plan, the town completed an energy audit that implemented retrofits and energy saving technologies throughout all town facilities.

In addition, the town is hosting a Green Building Summit on December 2 at Town Hall to raise awareness of green building resources. The summit will include speakers and vendors from the green building industry, including alternative energy professionals, green developers and a green roof specialist. Spaces are limited so please pre-register by sending an email to environment@oakville.ca.
