Town of Oakville recognized as youth-friendly community at Queen’s Park reception

The Town of Oakville was honoured at a reception at Queen’s Park last night as one of the top 2009 youth-friendly communities in Ontario for its commitment to providing diverse opportunities for youth to play, participate and contribute to their community.

The Honourable Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion and Sport for the Province of Ontario, presented Oakville with Bronze level recognition as part of Play Works’ Youth Friendly Community Recognition Program for its role in providing municipal recreation programs and fitness opportunities aimed at youth including swimming, tennis, boot camp, teen fitness, Pilates, karate and tai chi.

“With more than 10 per cent of our community made up of youth, focused programming, amenities and engagement opportunities for youth are a priority in Oakville,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “We’re very proud of this recognition and will continue to encourage Oakville’s youth to get involved in creating a more livable Oakville for both themselves and their peers.”

Play Works is an independent group of organizations that focuses on bringing the power of play to Ontario’s youth and recognizes communities taking steps to reinvest in youth play. The Play Works partners include 4-H Ontario; Arts Network for Children and Youth; Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada – Central Region; Educational Research, Laidlaw Foundation; Ophea; Sport Alliance of Ontario; Parks and Recreation Ontario; and YMCA Ontario.

The rigorous selection process requires communities to meet at least 10 of 16 youth-friendly criteria including providing opportunities for play, youth engagement, accessible programs and opportunities for youth activism. Communities work towards Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Community Builder recognition by raising the level of youth engagement.
