Town of Oakville offers free Family Day fun

More than 100 free recreation activities at your local community centre, arena and pool

February 9, 2010 – For immediate release
The Town of Oakville will again present Make Your Move Family Day, a day full of free programs and special events for all ages and abilities at town-owned community centres, pools, arenas and libraries.

“Last year’s Family Day event was so popular that this year we’ve expanded the number of activities and locations,” said Nina de Vaal, director of Recreation and Culture for the Town of Oakville. “We invite families to get active together and enjoy the benefits of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.”

In 2009, the town proudly received the Winter Active Community Challenge award from Parks and Recreation Ontario for Make Your Move Family Day and for being one of the most active communities.

This year’s event, sponsored by Genworth Financial Canada, offers families more than 100 free recreational activities to explore including: preschool and library programs, sport demonstrations and fitness classes, even Wii Olympic Winter video gaming.  Also new this year is free skating at all arenas and free swimming at all indoor pools courtesy of Tim Hortons.

Visit the Family Day web page for an event schedule or pick up a copy at any town recreation facility. Plan your day because you don’t want to miss some of the day’s highlights including:

Parasport sledge hockey and Zamboni photos at Glen Abbey Community Centre
Family boot camp and face painting at Iroquois Ridge Community Centre
Speed skating and sportball at River Oaks Community Centre
Children’s entertainment at Oakville Arena, Pine Room

As well as prizes and a few surprise visitors!

Pizza and beverages donated by Panago Pizza and Pepsico will be sold at each community centre with the proceeds to the town’s Recreation Connection Fund. The fund helps families in need participate in recreation programs.

Special thanks to our sponsors: Genworth Financial Canada, Tim Hortons, Entripy Custom Clothing, Panago, Pepsico and Whole Foods Market for their generous support.

With the exception of community centres, arenas, pools and select library branches, Town Hall and all other town-owned facilities will remain closed for the Family Day statutory holiday. All regularly scheduled programs are cancelled and accommodated during the regular schedule.

Emergency services will also remain operational.

Make Your Move Oakville is the town’s public education and awareness program to promote the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles and encourage residents to become more active through participation in various sport and recreational activities. For more information visit the Make Your Move web page.
