Town launches new online performance measurement tool

The Town of Oakville has launched a new online performance measurement web page to make information about key performance indicators more available to the public. The page combines a dashboard of key online performance indicators, as well as bringing together the town’s existing performance measurement data into one easy-to-access location.

“The town has made great progress in its performance reporting over the last four years, including the implementation of performance-based, program-based (PB2) budgeting,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “People deserve to know about the quality and effectiveness of the services the town provides, and this website compiles this helpful information for them in one easy-to-find location.”

The interactive dashboard of performance indicators provides a visual overview of key town performance indicators, including:

capital projects
development charges revenue
operating budget
tax levy supported debt
transit ridership

The website also brings together results from other ongoing internal performance measures including the town’s bi-annual citizen surveys, annual strategic plan updates and PB2 budgets. External benchmarks are provided through the annual Ontario Municipal Performance Measurement Program (MPMP) that allows residents to compare Oakville to other similar municipalities across Ontario.

“This Council is committed to open and transparent governance,” Mayor Burton noted. “Taxpayers have a right to know that their tax dollars are being spent wisely and effectively. We encourage our residents to access this information and ask their local ward councillors if they have any questions or concerns about the town’s performance.”

Town staff noted that this first tool is just a small step towards the town’s goal of providing the public with more web-based access to information. The town will be undertaking focus groups and surveys later this fall to determine what types of new online information and services the town should be providing in the future.
