Community invited to Fire Prevention Week Kickoff on September 26, 2015

Community invited to Fire Prevention Week Kickoff on September 26, 2015

Free BBQ, entertainment and fire safety demos for the entire family!

Oakville residents of all ages are invited to have fun learning about fire safety when the Oakville Fire department hosts its 16th annual Fire Prevention Week Kickoff event on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oakville Fire training campus.

This year’s event will include exciting rescue demonstrations, Oakville Hydro bucket truck rides, the Junior Firefighter Challenge clinic and more.

“Home fire safety involves everyone in the household, and this annual community event provides a fun and interactive way for all ages to learn about preventing fires and staying safe,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4 to 10, 2015, with the theme: Hear the BEEP where you SLEEP – Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm! Residents are encouraged to learn about the proper installation and maintenance of smoke alarms to keep family members and property safe.

“Half of home fire deaths happen between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep and that is why early detection is so important,” said Glenn Barwell, public education officer for the Oakville Fire department. “At a time when every second counts, working smoke alarms provide more time to escape.”

In addition to fire safety presentations, activities include a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog, pony rides, inflatable air rides, smoke room simulator, Junior Firefighter water squirt, and fire safety games for all ages. A free hot dog barbecue will be provided courtesy of McDonalds Restaurants of Oakville. Participants are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle for the water bar.

The Oakville Fire department’s training campus is located at 1144 South Service Road West. Free parking and shuttle bus service will be available at the Bronte GO station. Parking at the training campus is reserved for people with limited mobility or medical conditions.
