Survey feedback will help town plan for the future of Oakville and Bronte Harbours

Oakville and Bronte Harbours are bustling with summer activity, and the Town of Oakville is asking people to share their harbour experience. Residents are invited to fill out a short online survey for a chance to win a three-month Town of Oakville fitness pass.

The survey asks people how often they visit the harbours, how they travel there, what activities they participate in when they visit and what suggestions they have for improving the harbours. There is also an opportunity to submit ideas for the future use of Bronte Marina, the former Metro Marine building at 2508 Lakeshore Road West in Bronte.

In addition to the survey, street teams will interview people at various events and locations throughout town this summer. Information gathered from the survey and interviews will help the town develop its first Harbours Master Plan addressing both harbours under one unified vision and long-term strategy for harbour development and infrastructure.

“The master plan is going to shape the future of Oakville’s two iconic harbours, so it’s essential that Oakville residents help shape the plan,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “Whether you’re a boater, cyclist or simply someone who drops by with the family for ice cream, we want to hear from you.”

Along with determining the future use of Bronte Marina, the Harbours Master Plan will provide recommendations on improved public access, better connections to surrounding neighbourhoods, recreational amenities and priorities for both harbours and potential options for future harbour growth. If Council decides at a later date to explore the possibility of a new marina, further study including an Environmental Assessment (EA) will be required.

The team of consultants working on the Harbours Master Plan has interviewed residents from throughout Oakville as well as key stakeholders and community groups including residents’ associations, Business Improvement Associations (BIAs), environmental and heritage groups, boating clubs and associations as well as the Mayor and Councillors. Two community workshops were held on May 3, 2016 and more public meetings are planned for the fall.
