Council approves funding to kick start road improvements

February 24, 2010 – For Immediate Release

On February 16 Council approved $515,000 in additional funding for the town’s 2010 road resurfacing program. The funding increase accelerates an aggressive plan initiated by Council to improve Oakville’s road network over the next 10 years.

“Council wants to ease the frustration that residents and business owners have expressed with the condition of our roads,” said Mayor Burton. “This increase uses money that has been saved from earlier projects and moves us ahead to make significant improvements to our roads in the next 10 years.”

As part of the 2010 Budget, Council approved an increase of $750,000 in annual funding for the road resurfacing program every year from 2010 to 2019. Without this increase the percentage of roads below acceptable levels would jump from 14 percent today to 21 percent in 2019. If the 2019 funding level of $10 million is sustained until 2021, the town would have no roads below a desirable quality. The additional $515,000 will help kick start this program.

For 2010, the road resurfacing program will address maintenance that has been delayed pending coordination with other town road projects and regional repair works. Projects expected to be completed in 2010 and 2011 include resurfacing Kerr Street from Stewart Street to Speers Road and pavement rehabilitation on Sixth Line between McCraney Street and Ridge Drive.

Coordination with Halton Region ensures that subsurface work, such as sewers and water mains, is completed in advance of road resurfacing and allows the town to share costs and increase the number of roads included in the resurfacing program.

Council has increased the road resurfacing budget by 65 percent since 2006. This increase, coupled with the increases planned for the next 10 years, demonstrates the town’s commitment to improving roads in our community.

Road construction updates are available on the construction updates web page, along with a document on the 2010 budget and background information on the road selection process.
