It has been nearly 10 years since the federal government introduced the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, 2004 (PIPEDA). The main purpose of PIPEDIA is to prevent businesses, including brokerages, from disclosing consumers’ personal information without their permission.

Did you know that the Act codifies 10 principles of privacy that were introduced by the Canadian Standards Association in 1996? They are: accountability, identifying purposes, obtaining consent, limiting collection, limiting use, accuracy, protecting information, openness concerning policies and practices, consumer access, and challenging compliance.

Did you know that if you understand three simple principles, you will understand how the Act works in ordinary business dealings with consumers and business? One such principle relates to consent.
