2014 Oakville Minor Baseball Association season gets green light from town

Town agrees to deferred payment terms for unpaid permit fees

With support from the Town of Oakville, the Oakville Minor Baseball Association (OMBA) will play on next season after being thrown a curve ball. In August, the not-for-profit organization managed entirely by volunteers learned that their now former treasurer had been misappropriating funds including permit fees owed to the Town of Oakville for the 2013 season.

“The OMBA has been very open and candid about the events that have unfolded,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “Our collective goal is to ensure that the more than 700 youth registered with the OMBA will have the opportunity play ball next season. And they will.”

Last month, Council authorized staff to negotiate deferred payment terms with the OMBA for its outstanding 2013 unpaid permit fees. To help offset costs for next season, the OMBA is also investigating additional sponsorship and fundraising opportunities.

“We have taken clear and immediate steps to secure our financial resources and to restore trust to our members. We want nothing more than to keep this league thriving for the kids. That’s why we do it,” said OMBA President Dave Fulton.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2013, the OMBA will host its Annual General Meeting to review last year’s financial statements and steps recently taken to safeguard the organization’s ongoing financial operations. An update on the ongoing police investigation will also be presented. Current OMBA members are invited to attend.

Those wishing to sponsor or assist the OMBA in their fundraising efforts can email info@baseballoakville.com or call 905-847-5545.

The OMBA is a non-profit organization offering organized baseball programs to youth in Oakville. This year marked its 50th anniversary serving the community. Registration for the 2014 season is now open. For more information visit the Oakville Minor Baseball Association website.
